Squatter Shack

This is the remaining/standing squatter shack along the Augusta Canal on the Columbia County end of the canal (That I know of). The canal spans both Richmond and Columbia counties and is a beautiful area with the Augusta Canal on one side of the levee and the Savannah River on the other. Interesting story about these folks that simply set up homes along the Savannah River side of the Augusta Canal and paid nothing for many years. When the canal was designated a National Heritage site, the city took an interest in developing the area for walking and biking trails. This one was actually built onto the concrete wall and I remember it being very nice back when someone lived there within the last 15-20 years.
