A replica of a still in Stephens County in the Gumlog Community which also includes Franklin County represents the time when moonshiners operated in the area, which is now referred to locally as Land of Spirits. The history kicked off the local folk life play ten years ago. Old timers will whisper the area was dangerous to strangers. The creation of Lake Hartwell in 1959 and new property owners put moonshiners out of business, some of whom turned to cooking barbecue.
