This was the last standing one-room African American schoolhouse in the county. Founded around 1918 by former slave Benjamin Bennett, it served local students (without electricity, running water, or buses) until 1952. The school was a casualty of Hurricane Matthew, but plans are in the works for it to be rebuilt and interpreted at the Willow Hill Heritage Center down the road in Portal.
