Laprade's Marina & Fish Camp

Pictured are two cabins from the old Laprade's Marina & Fish Camp on Lake Burton in Rabun County. The Laprades, who were French Huguenots, came to N. Georgia from Virginia in 1833. John Laprade built these cabins for the Georgia Power Company in about 1918 to house the engineers and superintendents building the Burton dam. The lake filled in 1920 and in 1925 John Laprade opened his camp. The cabins were named for various employees. The fish camp became well known, especially because of the family-style, all-you-can-eat restaurant. John's son, Buford, took over in 1945, and later sold the camp to Wallace Nichols in 1972. The Nichols family sold the property to Atlanta developers in 2002, but they failed, and the property was again on the market. Peter and Tina Anzo tore down the old marina and built a new one in 2006. The old restaurant mysteriously burned down during the construction. The cabins are no longer used.
