Travelers Rest State Historic Site

It was built in 1815 by James Wylie as a stagecoach inn and plantation home. It was located along the newly opened Unicoi Highway thru the Appalachians. Wylie sold the Inn to Devereaux Jarrett in 1833 who doubled the size and made it the home place of his 14,000 acre plantation. It stayed in the family until the state purchased the site in 1955.
