Effie's
A brick from Effie's Whorehouse (or House of Ill Repute) in Clarke County. Effie's was know far & wide because it used to be right off of the trucker's main route, Hyw. 441, on the outskirts of Athens. Effie's consisted of 3 houses. It was in business since at least the late 1940s. It was finally shut down around 1975. In 1977 the Athens Fire Dept. burned the 3 buildings down in a training exercise. Me & a buddy of mine skipped school & rode down in his 1964 Buick Wildcat to watch them burn the buildings down. Clarke County sold some of the bricks from the buildings with a tag & the number of the brick. Not sure how many they sold. Wish I had bought one back in the day.
