"The Farm"

This is a picture my mother painted of "The Farm". It was my grandmother, Lucy Moore's, home. My dad, John Robert Moore, and my two aunts grew up there. It was on Highway 41, across from the dump, just north of Cassville in Bartow County. It is now a gas station

My aunt, Francis Moore, worked there almost her entire life. It closed upon her death in the 80s. She sold gas, snacks, novelties and chenille bedspreads. It was then a church and is now vacant.

Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Stilesboro

It was established in 1886. It consisted of members from two different African Churches in the area. One was affiliated with Raccoon Baptist Church of which there is mention of  in minutes from 1837. The other was off today's GA-113 but it burned long ago. One acre of land was donated in 1886 and more land purchased between 1896 and 1960. At one time there was a two story school for African-American children on the property but that is no longer around. The current church was built in 1920 and is still active today.

Euharlee Baptist Church in Bartow County

 It was established sometime before 1840 as Mount Paran Baptist Church. The early records were lost in a house fire. Due to its membership in the Coosa Association, it is known to be active in the 1840s. It is associated with Euharlee Baptist Church Cemetery and the old graves date to 1818. In 1852 the main structure of the sanctuary was constructed. A legend says the building was hit by a tornado which basically split the church in two. The church floor used metak to reconnect the two sections and for years the floor was uneven. In 1898, the name was changed to Euharlee Baptist Church and at times additional rooms and a new single porch was added. Today, the church is still active in the same 1852 sanctuary.

The Stilesboro Academy Building in Bartow County

The school opened in 1858 and moved into the building the next year. During the Civil War the Academy sewed Confederate uniforms until General Sherman came along and used the grounds to stable his horses. Legend has it that the phrase painted in the chapel, "Deo Ac Patriae" (God and Country) kept the building from being heavily damaged by Union soldiers. After the war it continued as a school until 1940 when  the Stilesboro Improvement Club took it over. I do not know who owns it now but it is endangered.

Brandon's Chapel Church in Stilesboro

 It was organized at some point by 17 year old Thomas Brandon as a Methodist Society at sometime later a Sunday School was built as a log cabin. Later a frame church was built on the present site but burned in 1897. The current sanctuary was dedicated in 1899 and served as a Methodist Church until the 1990s when it became a Baptist Church. Euharlee Presbyterian Church in Bartow County

It was established in 1853 and the beautiful sanctuary in 1855. The church survived the Civil war and the congregation was active until 2014. It then disbanded and donated the building to the city of Euharlee.They used the church for Sunday School, a community center, museum and it was available for weddings. On January 11,2020 a storm severely damaged the building by blowing the roof off. The city came together to put a tarp over the building, move artifacts out and stabilize the structure. It will be restored.

Raccoon Creek Baptist Church

It was founded in 1837 and is one of the oldest congregations in Bartow County. They originally met in a a log church on the same property they have today. The current sanctuary is the third and was constructed in 1917. During the Civil War a battle was nearby and for three days Union Troops camped there. The church is still going strong today 183 years later.

Old Foundation

The stabilized remains of the foundation for Lowry's Mill in Euharlee. Before the town became known as Euharlee it was known as Burge's Mill. It was named for Nathaniel Burke after he moved here from Gwinnett in 1834, purchased 800 acres of land around the creek and built a grist mill. Over time he sold land to other people who built or operated business in the area. Sometime between 1850 and 1860 he sold the mill  to Daniel Lowry II. A fire destroyed the mill around 1880 but Lowry rebuilt the mill. At some point the mill shut down and sat unused and falling in for many year. In 2014 the city began clearing brush and stabilizing the foundation.
