(No longer Standing) Picture taken in 2006 shortly before demolition. The Walden-Turner house was built in 1895 and was a local landmark in Stockbridge. For a time in the early 1900's it was a hotel. This was the last 2 story Victorian home in Stockbridge and was torn down by the city to make way for a fountain. Ironically, the fountain was not even placed over (or even close) to the footprint of the house. Also, as far as I can tell, nothing was salvaged from the house before demolition, everything went to the landfill.

I think this may have belonged to my family at some point. I wish it had been saved.
ReplyDeleteI had been in that house numerous time. I worked for the people who owned it. It was a grand beautiful old home and in the 80’s they were renovating it. Sad. So sad!!
ReplyDeleteI know that house well. I worked for an electrician named Hugh and his wife. Peaches Electric. Was a hard man to work for but taught me a lot. They were renovating the house a little at a time. It was a beautiful house inside what a shame!!
ReplyDeleteThey should have left it alone. It was part of our cities history. It makes me angry looking at the site where it once stood. That beautiful house would not have hindered that fountain. It could have been renovated into a museum for our city. So sad and shameful.
