ATKINSON COUNTY
Civil War memorial and burial site for James Summerlin, who died in 1864. This lone memorial sits in a 175 acre field in what was formerly Coffee County. "James Summerlin was a farmer, but his peaceful life on the old plantation was interrupted by the call to arms and the outbreak of the Civil war. He enlisted in a Georgia regiment and served with a division of the army that caught deserters and punished renegades and carried on a kind of guerrilla warfare. His career was brought to a sudden termination by his death at the hands of bushwhackers in Coffee County and here he was buried."
