Fort Benning GA
The first ever monument on Ft Benning in 1923 was placed to honor the memory of Calculator the dog. The monument reads
Calculator Born ?
Died Aug 29,1923...
He made better dogs of us all.
Old "Calc" was named due to his strange walking habit of putting down 3 legs and carrying 1. He was a favorite of the troops and would follow them to the training ranges hitching a ride on a narrow gauge train. He was mysteriously poisoned with strychnine and quarters were collected to raise a monument in his honor. He mooched meals from the troops, slept with them in the barracks and was loved by all, from enlisted to the officers.
