Monroe Railroad Depot

Nice to see the Monroe Railroad Depot built in 1885 has been restored. Built when the Walton Railroad from Social Circle was consolidated with the Gainesville Jefferson and Southern which came in from Winder. The GJ&S went into receivership in 1897 and was sold to the Gainesville Midland in 1904. The Walton Railroad was sold to the Georgia Railroad who created the Monroe Railroad to operate the property. The 2 railroads connected at the depot. The GM was abandoned in Monroe about 1948 and the Great Walton now operates the Monroe's Railroad but trains no longer come downtown.
