Plantation Home of Col. James Smith at Smithonia in Oglethorpe County
The plantation is located between Crawford Ga. and Colbert Ga. The house was built around a one room log cabin that dates to the 1700’s. After the Civil War Col. Smith had the largest working plantation east of the Mississippi River. The farm covered land in Oglethorpe, Madison and Clarke Counties. It was so large it was measured in square miles. A Bachelor, Col. Smith was Georgia state represe...ntative and senator. He ran unsuccessfully to be the Governor of Georgia. The editor of the Atlanta Constitution, Henry Grady wrote that Col. Smith stole the Confederate Treasury while it was being transferred from Montgomery. The Treasury was last seen in Wilkes County Ga. about 23 miles south of the plantation. It has never been proved Col. Smith had the gold.
