The Georgia Railroad Coaling Tower in Social Circle

Coaling towers are a relic from the days when trains were powered by steam and were very prevalent all over the US as the tenders had to be refilled often. They could be MUCH larger than this one. This one is of a smaller design for filling the loco's stationed there as well as replenishing the thru trains. These towers have become problematic for the railroads today, they are no longer used but the cost and service disruption involved in bringing one down far outweights the cost in leaving them intact. This one is of a later design. The depot to the left was constructed in 1913, The coaling tower probably a little later but certainly by the early 20's.
