Winterville, Georgia: A Classic Railroad Town
Few facts are known but much is speculated about the 5 graves behind the United Methodist Church. Four have a simple "UNKNOWN" marker, while one marks the grave of John Schroeder, Company F, of the Louisiana Militia, CSA.
From stories passed on, it is assumed that the 5 were all wounded Civil War soldiers that were placed on a train, intending to reach a Confederate hospital or home. As the train went through Winterville, they either died or their condition worsened to the point that they were removed from the train.
Their graves are about 100 feet from where the tracks were. That land at one point belonged to John Winter, and his family stories do include tales of caring for wounded Confederate soldiers.
