The Remains of the Horton House on Jekyll Island

Built around 1740 using tabby for the walls, it is one of the earliest remaining examples of the use of tabby, a mortar made from seashells and sand. Major Horton was an officer who served under James Oglethorpe in the militia and took command in 1743 when Oglethorpe left for England. After his death, Poulain Di Bignon took ownership.
