Athens Dudley Park

The Georgia Railroad was chartered in 1833 to build a railroad from Augusta to Athens, which was completed in 1841. When the line to Atlanta was completed in 1845, the line from Union Point to Athens became a branch line. The trestle in Athens is not that old, but it is old. The line to Athens was abandoned in the early 1980's. The main reason the trestle exists in Athens Dudley Park is because it was featured on back cover of REM's 1983 Album "Murmur". It has been saved and is now a historic landmark.
