Built in 1834 as a Plantation Plain house and given to Cobb as a wedding gift in 1844 by the first Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court Joseph Lumpkin. by 1852 Cobb had enlarged the house. The house was sold in 1873 by Cobb's widow and was used in several roles until being moved to Stone Mountain Park in 1984. But the Park never used the house and it sat languishing until being purchased and moved back to Athens in 2005 at allocation a blocks from where it originally sat. It has been restored and is open as a museum.
