Originally called Myrtle Grove, it was built in the 1850s in southern Bryan County by Richard James Arnold as a wedding present for his daughter, Louisa Gindrat Arnold. She married her cousin Samuel Greene Arnold, Jr., a lawyer, US Senator and Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island. A later owner was William Washington Gordon II, father of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts of America. The home has been featured in many films and TV shows, including Z: The Beginning of Everything, Underground, The Generals Daughter, and Glory.
