Statue of Confederate General Joseph Johnston in Downtown Dalton


It sits at the corner of Hamilton and Crawford Streets. It sits 16 feet high including the base. It is inscribed as follows: "Joseph E. Johnston 1807-1891 Brigadier General USA, General CSA, Given command of the Confederate Forces at Dalton in 1863. He directed the 79 days' Campaign to Atlanta, one of the most memorable in the annal...s of war. Erected by Bryan M Thomas Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy, Dalton, Georgia 1912." It was rededicated in October 2012 at the 100 year anniversary. Miss Belle Kinsey of Nashville designed the statue. Construction of the granite base was awarded to Southern Granite and Marble Company of Dalton. The bronze figure was cast at Tiffany in New York City. It cost 6,000 dollars to erect it in 1912.
