The Robert Toombs House and Museum in Washington

The house was built in 1794 by Dr. Joel Abbott. The next inhabitant was the Rev Alexander Hamilton Webster. There were 2 other in habitants until Robert Toombs occupied the house sometime around 1837. This larger than life figure is an Icon in Georgia history. Lawyer, Planter, Congressman, Senator and Confederate Secretary of State. He resigned his position in the Confederate Cabinet to become a General in the CSA Army and was wounded at Antietam. He was forced to flee his home at the end of the war to avoid capture and even left the country for awhile but returned and died in his home in 1885.
