Many people probably don't remember that Melvin Ernest Thompson was the 71st Governor of Georgia back in 1947-1948. After his time as governor, he moved to Valdosta, where he operated a successful real estate company until his death on October 3rd, 1980. This unassuming historic building on Hill Avenue (US 84 East) in Historic downtown Valdosta in Lowndes County gives a hint through the old weathered sign of the building of what it once housed: M.E. Thompson's Real Estate Office. If you look closely, you can make out his name and the words real estate at the bottom.
