Although located in Grant Park near the center of Atlanta the lone surviving relatively intact example of Atlanta's earthen fortifications that once ringed the city during the Civil War is largely overlooked and forgotten. Named "Fort Walker" after Confederate Major General W.H.T. Walker was killed on July 22, 1864 during the Battle of Atlanta, it is located near the park's southeast corner directly behind Zoo Atlanta.
