It was established in 1785 by Revolutionary War Soldier Rev Dozier Thornton. This is another of those churches established on what was then the frontier in Georgia. There are several Revolutionary War veterans buried here and it is named after famed Cherokee Chef David Vann. It is the 6th oldest Baptist Church in the state but the oldest in continuous operation. The current structure is the 2nd one and built on the site of the first in 1935.
