Captain Ralph Banks had served in a couple of North Carolina Regiments and fought in the Battle of Camden SC and at Kings Mountain and maybe others. In 1785 he received a land grant in Elbert County, which at the time was colonial frontier lands. One of his sons, Dr. Richard Banks, is the namesake for Banks County. The house at Coldwater Plantation was completed sometime around 1788. The exterior of the house remains mostly the same as built.
