Originally built as the Georgia Theater in Statesboro in 1936. I saw many movies here as a kid in the early 70s including "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", "Song of the South", and "Meatballs". The last film I recall seeing at the Georgia was "Purple Rain" in 1984, shortly before the theater closed. Years later it was renovated and is now the Emma Kelley Theater as part of the Averett Center for the Arts.
This was a great "classic" movie theater back in the day, a little rundown, with a tight stair leading to the balcony level that attracted the teenage crowd who often had little interest in watching the screen. It can bee seen in the movies "Now and Then" (1995) and "1969" (1988).
