This is Thomas Spalding’s mainland home (Ashantilly Plantation) near Darien in McIntosh County. In the town of Darien, with its abundant bike trails , you can easily access this jewel of a location( as I did ). It was built in 1820. The home is in the process of being beautifully restored to it’s original condition. The original construction took almost 3 years. The house is made out of tabby and was named after Ashintully Castle, his ancestral home in Perthshire, Scotland.
Thomas Spalding was one of the most influential agriculturists and political figures of his day in Georgia. He was a United States Representative from Georgia and he was born in Frederica on St. Simons Island. He was a lawyer by education, and was a member of the Georgia Senate (1799). He moved to McIntosh County in 1803 and then again served in the Georgia Senate as Democratic-Republican ( imagine that) He served as a trustee of the McIntosh County Academy in 1807 and was one of the founders of the Bank of Darien and of the branch in Milledgeville, and president for many years.
Spalding engaged in cultivation of, cotton as a commodity crop on Sapelo Island.
Thomas Spalding is also the namesake of the county I call home! ( 30 miles south of Atlanta )
