Ray Charles Plaza in Albany
James Leon Hudgins
Ray Charles Plaza sits on the banks of the Flint River in downtown Albany (Dougherty County).
Located on Front Street across from the Hilton Inn, the park features a life sized statue of Ray Charles Robinson (1930-2004) sitting at his piano. Sometimes the water in the fountain is flowing and the statue lights up and revolves and you can hear his music playing. . There is a plaque in front of the statue that also includes braille for the blind. There used to be a smaller statue for the blind to touch but it was removed because of vandalism. Around the statue are two walkways. One has a sitting area that is made to look like piano keys and the other has musical note shapes on the ground. The walkways connect to the Albany River Walk.
Albany has several other places of interest to visit including the zoo at Chehaw Park, the Albany Civil Rights Institute, The Flint Riverquarium, and of course Jimmie's Hot Dogs!!
