It was founded in 1786 and is considered one of the oldest Presbyterian Congregations in the colonial backcountry. The first church brush arbor followed by a log church. Guards had to be posted to watch for hostile Indians. A bigger church was built in the earl 1800's and it was replaces by this building in 1872. In 1886, Dr. James Woodrow, an uncle of Woodrow Wilson was put on trial here in what was the first Monkey Trial. Dr. Woodrow wold be found not guilty and go on to greater accomplishments, including the Presidency of the University of South Carolina.
