Fort Frederica

The last remaining rampart of Fort Frederica on St. Simon's. Built in the late 1730's as a settlement and Fort to counter Spanish incursions. At one time over 900 people lived here. The need for the fort ended when the British beat the Spanish at the battle of Bloody Marsh on the island. By the mid 1750's the soldiers were largely gone and after the fire of 1758, the settlement was abandoned except for a few troops who remained until the Revolutionary War.
