This is the Crescent- It is in Lowndes County, a few blocks North of Downtown Valdosta on North Patterson Street. Construction was started on it all the way back in 1898 by a United States Congressman by the name of William Stanley West. Those columns you see wrapping around the house - there are 13 total; each one represents one of the original 13 colonies. Mr. West’s house is very close to Valdosta State University; he was instrumental in donating the land and pushing for the legislation to establish what was then called the South Georgia State Normal College- he donated fifty acres of his own land to start it; Thanks to Mr. West’s generous contributions, the main (and most iconic) building on VSU’s campus bears his name to this day: West Hall!
