It was established in 1831 as Snake Creek Church. In 1868, the name was changed to New Providence Baptist Church and land was purchased for a church. In 1870 the name was changed to Sugar Valley Baptist and in 1879 the church you see here was constructed. In 2001, the members voted to build a new sanctuary and attempts to give or donate this church to another congregation were unsuccessful and it looked like the building would be demolished. A local resident wrote a letter to a local paper and and after the extremely popular response the church was saved and moved a quarter of a mile and that's where it is today.
