It was built in 1939 as a 500 seat single screen movie theater. Built by Fred T. Mclendon as one of 36 he owned around the southeast, The Currahee Arts Council bought it in 1982 and it operated as Schaefer Center. In 2012 the city bought it and restored it using some funds from the Fox Theater Institute and today hosts movies, plays and concerts.
