It was was organized in 1867, The first building was small wooden building. As the congregation grew the church outgrew and it was torn down and in 1914 the current building was dedicated. On April 17th 1944, a young Martin Luther King delivered his first public speech here. The 15 year old delivered a speech as an essay in a contest sponsored by the Colored Elks Clubs of Georgia, who were holding their state convention here.
