It was established in 1867 and is the first black church established in the city. In 1830 Athens Baptist Church was founded and soon after constructed their own building. Slaves and owners worshipped together but soon there were separate servicess.
At the time most churches had the same white ministers preach to both blacks and whites but Athens First Baptist ordained the first black minister, Brother Glaskow to preach to the black congregation. In 1857, the slaves and freedmen were given permission to build their own church next to Athens First Baptist. In 1867 they built there own church at this location and named it after their first minister, the Rev, Floyd Hill. I don't know when the present building was constructed but it was prior to 1920.Today it is still quite active and a part of the Reese Historic District in Athens.
