Lake Burton Bridges

This is the old and new 76 Highway bridge (the primary E-W highway in NE GA) across Lake Burton in Rabun County. The older piers were built 1918-21 as the lake filled. The lake was declared full in August, 1920. We are coming to the centennial of the lake and the bicentennial of Rabun County (2019). The original one lane bridge was built by the Georgia Power and Railroad Company (precursor of GA Power) at a cost of $100,000. The new two lane bridge was completed in 1976. Jumping from the bridge (which is technically illegal) has been a rite of passage for many a youngster.
