It was built in the Federal style by John Williams in 1822 for Richard Orme, editor of a newspaper, the Southern Recorder. When Sherman's Army went thru, Mrs Orme hid her son-in-law, a confederate soldier, in the attic to keep him from capture. The portico and balcony were added later. This house is widely considered the best example of the Federal Style in Milledgeville.
