A local teenager, Charles L Thompson petitioned Andrew Carnegie directly as Newnan had no public library at the time. His petition was early in the Carnegie grant era and one of the first in the state. The cornerstone was laid in 1903 and opened to the public in 1904. It is probably the oldest surviving Carnegie Library in the state. The library served until 1987 when a new location was built outside of downtown, but today the renovated structure provides library services in the first floor while the second story is meeting space.
