A Pigeonnier is a roosting house for pigeons. Pigeons were raised in the upper section where they entered through holes cut near the roof. In the daytime the pigeons flew into the fields to feed themselves with grain, insects, and worms. Pigeonniers were in use for nearly 150 years since squab (pigeons) were eaten and considered fine dining.
This Pigeonnier House is located on the old Callaway Plantation outside of Washington, Ga. in Wilkes County.
