It was originally designated to be the post office and courthouse, 1893 and 1894. Jeremiah O'Rourke was the architect. It is said, that O'Rourke wanted to add his signature to the building, but this request was denied, as it was a government building. "tradition" has it, that since his request was denied, he came up with the idea to actually sign it, by adding 2 portraits of himself in carved marble on the north and south sides of the building, up near the eaves. This has never been confirmed, and the carvings have never been identified, but the story adds charm to a beautiful southern city.
