The Georgia Midland & Gulf Railway Depot in Ellerslie was built in 1891 and is believed the only surviving depot built by that railroad. The GM&G was built from McDonough thru Griffin and Warm Springs to Columbus and complete in 1887. The railroad ended up a part of the Southern Railway in 1896. The depot, no longer in use was moved away from the tracks in 1946 and became a community center. In 1988 the rail line was abandoned and in 2005 a grant was given to restore the depot. It was moved back to it's original location. Ironically, the structure has been a community center far longer than it ever was an active depot .
