Dewberry Baptist Church #1 in Hall County

Why the #1? Well in 1821 a group of 23 got together and erected a small church and called it Dewberry. In the 1830s two members, Philip Byrd from Hall County and George Chapman, relocated from South Carolina in 1831 were two of the leading members of the church. The two men were of strong will and loved a good argument. Brother Bird strictly adhered to one of the doctrines being preached while Brother Chapman had the audacity to question the doctrine. This interpersonal struggle went on for a time and came to a head when it was time to pick a new pastor. Byrd and Chapman each backed their own choice.
One day day while they were eating together Byrd picked up a piece of chicken with his fork and waved it at Chapman saying, "‘Brother Chapman, it was predestinated before the foundation of the world that I was to eat this piece of chicken."
Chapman knocked the chicken off the fork with a biscuit and the split occurred. Chapman and all but three of the 75 members left and eventually formed Dewberry #2 while Byrd and his three faithful members continued on with #1. Today both are still active with #1 pictured here and still on it's original site. I am not sure exactly how old the building is and there have been additions, but the main structure likely goes back to before 1900.
