The Robert Shand Smith House in Washington
Circa 1854. Smith was an ambitious and very industrious business man born in Charleston SC. His second wife, 10 years older than him was a great grandchild of Jacob Motte of Charleston who served as treasurer of the colony of South Carolina. Somehow they met and James Dubose of Georgia who apparently lured him to Washington and gave Smith 75 Acres of his large plantation on the south side of Washington. Smith arrives in Washington in 1854 and moved into the house in 1855. He became a prominent business man in the area and also agent for the Georgia Railroad for 30 years, which cemented his importance to the community.
