The Former Western & Atlantic Railroad Depot in Ringgold
Constructed with sandstone in 1849, the depot served what was at the time of it's construction the largest town between Augusta and Nashville. During the Civil War, the depot was last one passed during the Great Locomotive Chase. The general ran out of wood and water and stopped 2 miles north of the depot. During the battle of Ringgold Gap, the depot anchored General Cleburne's line of defense in the retreat of the Army of the Tennessee. Today, the depot is owned by the city and a convention and meeting venue and the rail line is still quite actively used by W&A successor CSX.
