The Joseph Henry Lumpkin House in Athens
It was built in the 1830s. Attorney Lumpkin bought in in 1842, renovated and enlarged it and changed its orientation from facing west to south. Lumpkin, a big proponent of education, co-founded UGA's School of Law in 1859 and went on to become the first Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court in 1863. After he died, the home was taken over by Sophie Sosnowski, a wealthy German Immigrant and widow. She and her daughter started Madam Sosnowksi's Female Institute and became well known for its instruction of German, French and music. The school closed afer she died in 1899. It has also been the home of the Athens Womens Club. Not sure what its function is today.
