The Only Depot Tunnel Hill Has Ever Had

The Western & Atlantic Railroad finished it's line between Chattanooga and Atlanta in the late 1840s and the depot, made of cut stone was finished in 1852. State owned, Governor Brown had a controversy in 1857 when he proposed using profits from the railroad to fund public education, something not in existence then and very frowned upon by the planter class in the state. During the Civil War, the General and Texas passed thru here during the Great Locomotive Chase.
Today, the Depot is being repaired ad renovated for use as a community center. The state still owns the railroad property although the infrastructure tracks and signals are owned by CSX. The original tunnel bore was bypassed well after the war but still exists.
