Old Water Tower

If you happen to be traveling through Troup County & see the quaint small town of Hogansville, in West Georgia, halfway between Atlanta & Columbus, pay close attention as you go by the elementary school; you'd swear a medieval castle battlement just caught your eye! Even after doing a double take, that's still what it looks like.

If you walk up to it, you'll realize something interesting: It's not a castle at all! The structure is a very old water tower! I'm not sure why they decided to create a water tower that looks like an old castle, but it's interesting they did, & even more intriguing it still stands over 100 years later!

This water tower wasn't ever part of the city's water supply. Originally, it was built in the early 1900s & was used by the Hines Cannery, which made Hines Brunswick Stew & Hines Georgia Hash until the plant closed in the 1950s. After the cannery closed, vegetation grew up around the tower over many years, until it was almost forgotten.

Fortunately, thanks to grants, land & money donations from the town's residents, in 2010 the area around the tower was cleaned & turned into a one-of-a-kind walking trail! You can actually walk into the base of the tower & look all the way up; it sounded like an echo chamber!
