Brooks County Courthouse

If you drive down U.S. Highway 84 in South Central Georgia into Brooks County, you'll pass through the small town of Quitman, Georgia.

Pay attention as you pass the intersection of South Court Street. If you look North as you pass by, you'll see the historic Brooks County Courthouse. It sits just a few yards from Highway 84, so you can't miss it!

The Brooks County Courthouse was built between 1859 & 1864; it was designed by an architect by the name of John Wind.

Because of shortages of material and labor during the war, the courthouse was one of only two courthouses in Georgia built during the Civil War! (The other one is the Banks County Courthouse in Homer.)

The plans for this courthouse were initially extravagant...but because of the Civil War, plans were scaled way back; there was initially a proposed parapet, cupola, roof balustrade, ornate courtroom columns, and porticos on the ends of the building...but none of those plans ever made it off the drawing board.

The county paid for the building with $14,985 in Confederate money. Assuming the Confederate money had an exchange rate roughly equivalent to the US dollar, that $14,985 adjusted for inflation, today would be $466,006.42!
