It was established in 1788 in Western Wilkes County which was then Colonial backcountry. Some of the charter members had served under Elijah Clarke at the Battle of Kettle's Creek. The church was then known as Hutton's Fork Church and the first pastor would go on to found Mercer University. Between 1795-1797 it was renamed Sardis Baptist Church. The current structure was built in 1835 and is still active today.
