Historic Building in Sparta

Sparta in Hancock County was a hub for transportation way back with two major stagecoach lines crossing. In the late 1700s the Eagle Tavern was built and was one of the main gathering places in the area. In 1825 a large party was held here for the Marquis de LaFayette on his tour of the country he helped gain independence. A fire in the 1830s destroyed the tavern and on its property this structure was completed in 1840. originally known as Edwards House, in 1897 it was renamed Drummer's Home and in 1900 voted the most popular in the state. In 1941 it was renamed the Lafayette Hotel and today it still stands I'm not sure what it is used for today.
