Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Milledgeville

It was established in 1850 as a part of the new Archdiocese of Savannah. The first Catholic Mass in the city had been celebrated in April 1845 in Hugh Treanor's residence in the Newell Hotel. Mr. Treanor owned the Oconee Grist Mill whose remains are on the river today. He was also local author Flannery O'Connor's Great Grandfather. In 1873, O'Connor's Grandfather, Peter J Cline and other Catholics in the area met and decided to build a church. A lot was purchased and the current church was completed in 1874 but the first resident priest Fatehr Robert F Kennedy did not arrive until 1889. The church is still quite active today.
